It looks as though it's tied or shaped like a sharp goatee. How did it look from the front?
This image also highlights the damage pover the years that has happened to the mouth and nose area. Again, it is difficult to dismiss the fact that everything seems to be perfect in scale and relative position - thus forming the Face in the Desert.
